BIRTHDAY CROWN: STEP BY STEP
Once you’ve signed up to our newsletter you will receive the password to our downloads page. Select the birthday crown and party hats.
Your download includes the pattern template plus the below step-by-step instructions and information about supplies.

Supplies
- 40 x 12 cm yellow felt for crown, 3 mm thick
- felt for numbers, 1 mm thick: navy blue, approx. 20 cm x 20 cm
- felt remnants for decoration, 1 mm thick: we used white and pink
- 60 cm twill tape or ribbon
- matching sewing thread or embroidery floss
- sewing kit: sharp scissors, needle, textile marker
Notes on materials
- You can either create all numbers if you’re gifting a full set, or only cut a single number and attach that.
- This crown works in all sorts of colours and materials. It’s a great way to use up leftovers! If you cannot find 3 mm thick felt, you may also use 2 layers of thinner felt. In that case, sew the two layers on top of each other first with a sewing machine. This will give the crown the required body. You can even sew together two layers of fabric with some batting in between.
- If you’re using embroidery floss, sew with a single strand.

Step 1. Cut and trace templates.
- Using regular scissors, cut out the paper templates.
- Place the half crown template on the edge of the yellow thick felt. Trace the shape on the felt. Pick up the paper template, flip it over to mirror the design, then trace the other half of the crown next to the first half. This will create a full crown shape.
- Now trace the required number(s) onto the navy blue thin felt. Finally trace 2 x the diamond and 2 x the circle shapes onto the felt remnants.

Step 2. Cut felt shapes.
- Using sharp fabric scissors, cut out the felt shapes.

Step 3. Sew on shapes.
- Using your needle and matching thread, hand sew the required number to the centre of the crown. We used a long running stitch. This is easy to remove in case you want to replace the number for following birthdays.
- Next, hand sew on the decorative shapes. Use the grey lines on the paper template as a placement guide. We used a whip stitch.

Step 4. Sew on twill tape or ribbon.
- Cut the twill tape or ribbon into 2 equal lengths. Fold over one end of the tape or ribbon by 1 cm.
- Using your needle and matching thread, hand sew this end to an inside end of the crown.Use the grey cross on the paper template as a placement guide. Use a short running stitch all the way around the folded end for extra security.
- Repeat for the other side of the crown.
- Cut the loose ends of the ties diagonally to stop them from fraying.

Step 5. Enjoy your handmade birthday crown!
- To replace the number, carefully cut the stitches and unpick any loose thread on the crown. Sew on the new number.
PARTY HATS: STEP BY STEP
Just like the birthday crown, the party hats are easy to whip up in any leftover material. Just make sure the material is firm enough to stand up on its own. We used felt, but card stock works too!
The hats are fun to decorate with scraps. You can make three or thirty, it all depends on the size of your party crowd!

Supplies
- 12 x 20 cm felt, 1 mm thick
- decoration: felt bead, optional: felt remnants
- 45 cm elastic sewing thread
- matching sewing thread or embroidery floss
- sewing kit: textile crayon, sharp scissors, pins, needle
- optional: iron-on interfacing of fabric stiffener
Notes on materials
- This hat works in all sorts of colours and materials. It’s a great way to use up leftovers! If you’re using thinner fabrics, be sure to add some structure with iron-on interfacing or fabric stiffener.
- If you like, you can sew the diamond or circle shapes from the crown on some of your hats to match the set.
- If you’re using embroidery floss, sew with a single strand.

Step 1. Cut and trace template.
- Using regular scissors, cut out the paper template.
- Trace the template onto the felt with the textile crayon.

Step 2. Cut and strengthen felt.
- Using sharp fabric scissors, cut out the felt shape.
- If needed, strengthen the felt with interfacing or stiffener.

Step 3. Sew hat closed.
- Pin the hat closed: overlap the two edges using the grey line on the template as a guide.
- Using your needle and matching thread, hand sew the hat closed. We used a running stitch.

Step 4. Attach bead.
- Using your needle and matching thread, hand sew the felt bead onto the tip of the hat.

Step 5. Attach elastic.
- Using your needle and matching thread, hand sew a 5 mm long vertical loop into the bottom side of the hat, about 1 cm from the bottom edge.
- Tie one end of the elastic into the loop.
- Find the exact opposite point on the hat.
- Sew an identical loop.
- Check the length of your elastic, then tie the other end of the elastic to this loop.

Step 6. Enjoy your handmade party hat!
- Repeat steps 1 – 5 to make as many hats as you need.
